The Wood River Massacre

July 10, 1814

One of the most tragic events in early Wood River Township history was the Indian massacre that killed six children and one woman at what is now the Fosterburg Road gate of Alton State Hospital. The dead were William and Joel Moore, aged 10 and 9; their cousins, John and George Moore,  aged 10 and 3; Mrs. Rachel Reagan and her children, Elizabeth, aged 7 and Timothy, aged 3. These victims are buried at the Vaughn Graveyard.
